PUT ON YOUR MASK FIRST - by Lisa
"Put on your mask first and then assist your fellow passengers." We've all heard this time and time again as we settle into our airplane seats. But how many us realize this is actually spiritual advice?
I was recently at a great new coffee shop that is actually run by a church. They have all kinds of interesting books there to read. A thought in one of them caught my eye. The book was called Living in Christ by a woman named Raphaela. Here is the gist of the thought:
"See to your own salvation first. Then 1000 around you will also be saved."
Now, obviously, we are saved by faith in Christ and not by our own doing. But the important thing is the commitment to grow in Christ. It's not enough to just receive salvation. Our goal for the rest of our lives is to increase in Christlikeness.
So... what does this have to do with the quote? Sometimes we think we can go out and "do ministry" without seeing to our own spiritual life first. But that doesn't work. Only a deep relationship with Christ will ground us enough to be a light to others. And the deeper the relationship, the brighter the light.
The good news is that if we are faithful in our spiritual disciplines to grow in faith everyday, our example could bring a thousand others to Christ. Wow. That really highlights the importance of living for God.
So I guess I'll make sure I put my spiritual oxygen mask on first! What about you?
Blessings,
Lisa
