THE REAL JESUS - by Calvin
"Jesus has his very own brand of rock and roll," sings the Christian band called Downhere. My close friend, Dave, sent me their song, "The Real Jesus," because he wants to show people what Jesus really looks like. Have you seen the real Jesus?
The opening lyrics of the song describe the Jesus we see in culture, you know, the "Jesus in the Gallup Poll." He's the Jesus we find on the cover of Time. We see this Jesus on the silver screen where he's often portrayed as "all serene." That's the Jesus most people know. "But Jesus is the only name that makes you flinch," sings the band.
Then the lyrics shock us to a startling reality, "Jesus isn't white." What's that? Of course Jesus isn't white; he was born to a semitic Jewish mother. Have you seen the real Jesus?
"Jesus has distinguishing marks on his hands," they sing. So now we're talking about the real Jesus. He's well acquainted with suffering, sorrow and pain. He was willing to hold the hands of prostitutes and lepers for the glory of the Father. If you believe in a Jesus that promises prosperity and a tidy life, then you don't know the real Jesus.
"Oh, can anybody show me the real Jesus?" asks Downhere. Well, that is the heart desire of my friend Dave. He wants to live life in such a way that people can see the real Jesus in him. He wants to be real rather than present the ideal public image of a religious leader. He wants to be a blessing to all who see him. Dave is willing to be seen with sinners, for the glory of the Father.
Seeing the real Jesus is like getting past the face we put on for the public and being the real you. Jesus doesn't wear rose colored glasses. He sees a clear reality of the world. He is willing to hang out with those who are rejected by religious people so that he can show them the love of the Father.
Once you've seen the real Jesus, then you'll want to be like him. And once you start to become like him, then others, maybe even real sinners, will start to see Jesus in you.
So leave a comment and let us know what you think.
