A NEW KIND OF DESERT - By Calvin Wulf

Spiritual Formation

What is the ideal way of Christian life? If community is important, then what kind of community is best? Early Christians started asking these questions before 300 C.E. They were on a spiritual journey.

These Christians responded by beating a path into the desert. After all Jesus himself and later the apostle Paul went into the desert for spiritual preparation. The desert wilderness offers silence and solitude, along with stark simplicity, where the sojourner can focus on the things of God. As time went on, they even gathered into communities.

Our media saturated high tech world is a tough place to focus on a quiet spirituality that goes deep. Maybe we need to find a new kind of desert. How can we fit desert spirituality into our lifestyle without leaving home? Let's explore this idea together. What do you say?
