A BRIDGE WE MUST CROSS - By Calvin

When we pray like Jesus and the Apostles, we cross a bridge that spans the chasm between our noisy world and desert silence. It ushers us into a place where we can be still and behold God.  We discover a path into desert spirituality without ever leaving the comforts of home.

An early Christian desert sage known as Mark the Ascetic says, "If your mind can pray without distraction, your heart will soon be softened." What a wonderful invitation! Contemplation begins with a discipline that quiets the mind by chasing away distractions. It's a great way to enter into desert silence.

Contemplation on God is the one needful thing that Jesus recommends. It's simple to practice but difficult to master. Still, it is a bridge we must cross in order to enter into desert silence as we behold the face of God. All you need is a little instruction, a quiet place, a comfortable seat and twenty minutes out of your day. Want to give it a try?
