BLING BLING - By Lisa Are Wulf
Spiritual Struggles

What's it like to be a pre-teen American girl today? I recently saw a couple of media clips that made me wonder. Both featured girls shopping for all the latest "stuff." One said that if she didn't get the right clothes from the right stores, ugly rumors would spread at school and that would be bad.
Now fast forward 30 or 40 years. If these girls are taught that their highest value is to buy, own, and display stuff, how will it affect their lives? More specifically, what about their souls? My guess is that they will endure an emptiness at the core that possessions just can't fill.
It's sad to think that today's young girls are being set up by society for serious spiritual struggles down the road. Of course, nobody is immune to problems. But from a Christian standpoint, isn't feeding their souls more important than filling their shopping bags? What do you think?

Great Post Lisa, younger people often learn these lessons the hard way, through experience, which is fair enough. The will learn that all the possessions in the world won't make you happy if your not spiritually fulfilled. Things come and go, but love, family and God are forever.

Hi -
Thanks so much for your post. Yes, I agree that it's too bad that young people often have to learn from experience that more stuff isn't going to make them happy. God is eternal but bling isn't!

Thank you for posting this. For too long we've been trained to let the marketing machine tell us what we need to be who they want us to be. We've traded our futures for trinkets and novelties. We need to be reminded again and again that we have a better offer in eternal life in Christ.

Hi -
Sure appreciate your comment on my blog. I agree - why are we letting the "marketing machine" determine how we live our lives. In today's world it takes a lot of determination to walk in a different direction. But it's worth it in the end.
