CROSSES, CANDLES AND ICONS - By Calvin Wulf

Spiritual Life

What's missing in the atmosphere where you worship? Crosses, candles and icons have been added or removed by various movements ever since Jesus died on a cross. But these Christian symbols are primary visual elements that raise our sense of sight heavenward.

The cross is the central theme of Christianity but it has been designed out of many modern churches. I don't know why some churches don't burn candles but Jesus himself is seen walking among the candle stands of the churches in Revelation. Icons are traditionally considered to be windows into heaven. They are simply pictures designed to draw the worshiper into relationship with God and his people.

Crosses, candles and icons are just  visual means to a spiritual encounter with God so there's nothing to fear. If they're missing, then maybe it's time to add them back into your mix of Christian spirituality. You can use them at home if they're not accessible at your church.
