WHERE'S THE GORILLA? - By Lisa Are Wulf

Spiritual Journey

I don't know its name, but I saw a thought provoking film clip at a seminar last weekend. The concept was simple. Two teams pass a couple of basketballs between the players. Our assignment was to count how many times each team passed the ball.

Easy enough. But here's the catch. I was so busy trying to count the passes that I totally missed a man in a gorilla suit walking slowly onto the set. He stood for several moments in the middle of the basketball court and then leisurely ambled out the other side.

What a perfect description of the spiritual life. Often I'm so caught up in the issues of today - struggles, work, whatever - that I'm blind to the big picture. God, or a gorilla, could walk in right now and I'd never know it.

How about you? Is your mind consumed with tiny details - or can you step back and see God?

    Dear Lisa,

Yes, I have seen the same video, and yes I did spot the Gorila. you have to ask yourself a question: so what? Really, the gorila entering was very entertaining but did not affect the game nor it's outcome. It was there as a destruction but really if you have noticed it, like me, then it only shows alertness yet it was harmless. i would say, the Gorila was the detail that I would like to miss if it does not add to the picture at all. Now had the gorila affected the outcome of the game then a) it's quite possible we would have noticed it, b) it would have been just another detail or a comic relief. We are so prejudiced with what we have to accomplish, it is in our trust and focus that we get lost. The exercize is to be allert and keep our mind open to expect the unexpected, and sometimes it would mean loosing count! yet, isn't it great that we can replay the video? God Bless. Jolanta

      Hi There -

That's cool that you've seen the gorilla video too. I can sure understand your point that the gorilla didn't really affect the outcome of the game. For me the video signified that I'm sometimes so busy "doing" ministry that I don't notice God in the middle of it. So it was a lesson for me.

Thanks so much for writing. I appreciate your insightful comments.
