SOAKING VEGETABLES - By Lisa Are Wulf
Christian Living

I read an interesting factoid online the other day. It seems that St. Francis would never allow his cook to soak the vegetables for the next day's menu overnight. That's because he literally followed the command of Jesus to "take no thought for tomorrow."
Wow! That immediately plunged me into an abyss of self-criticism since I tend to rely a lot on my savings, not to mention the other assets. But my husband reminded me of a passage in Proverbs. You know - the one where we're told to admire the ants because they store up provisions. OK - so who's right?
I freely admit that I'm really an "ant" in disguise. The thought of not planning ahead seems unwise and downright scary. But maybe I'm missing something. I suppose a truly holy person would rely solely on God with no thought for the future. But can I actually do that?
What about you? How do you solve this dilemma?

Such a dilemma! Planning makes me happy and my life seems better. I think we have different temperaments, (like Meyers/Briggs tests). I also think we have more than one trait. We have planner tendencies as well as spontaneous tendencies. Some of our behaviors have been affected by our parents, teachers, and work experiences. Most school experience rewards planning and analytical thought and discourages creativity and "no thought for tomorrow" thinking. I want my veggies rinsed and beans and peas soaked even overnight. Have an awesome week!

Hi Erin -
Thanks for your comment. Yeah - this is a real dilemma. I agree that most of us are rewarded for planning ahead - and it feels safer too. But I guess you have to hand it to Francis to be willing to live with such trust in God.
Calvin agrees with you - he doesn't want unsoaked beans either!
Thanks again,
Lisa
