Spiritual Formation - Contemplation-Beholding God

Enter Into Quiet

Note: The following is an excerpt from our free study called, Contemplation - Beholding God. Read more about this download here.

Christian contemplation has its roots in the ancient Jewish traditions of prophets, sages and rabbis. Jesus no doubt taught the apostles, and they handed it down to the new Christians. It's an ancient piece of our spiritual puzzle hidden from many modern Christians, especially in Protestant traditions.

The practice of contemplation teaches us how to stop the noise of our busy lives and be still in the presence of God. The objective is to learn how to live in a spiritual mode that the desert fathers call stillness. Their ancient ways show us how to become quiet in body and thought so that we can be present with God in the Spirit.

To behold God is the highest level of contemplation. Yes, this has led some people into the very presence of God sitting on his throne. The veil was torn from top to bottom when Jesus died so we are able to enter into the very presence of God. It is not effort on our part that transports the human intellect into divine realms. Instead, we learn how to be still and let God take us where he wants us to go.
