"Steve, I'm so stoked you're willing to be my spiritual mentor," Chad exclaims.
"I'm honored, but I'm also curious," replies Steve as the two walk along a wooded path.
"Curious, about what?"
"Well, what prompted you to ask me?"
"Seriously Steve, you're like my dad but you're not my father. There's something about you that makes me think you can help me go deeper spiritually," answers Chad.
"Go deeper?" Steve ponders. "In what way?"
"Well, like, I started doing serious Bible study in college, but now that I'm married and settled into a career, I just don't get enough out of it any more," Chad explains.
"So you want a deeper Bible study?"
"No, that isn't it, Steve. Bible study fills my head about God, but I feel empty inside. Sure, I asked Jesus into my heart, but I really don't feel him there," admits Chad.
"So, you're saying you know about God, but you don't feel like there's a real relationship. Is that it?" Steve probes.
"Something like that," Chad replies. "But, is it possible to have a real encounter with God?"
"Well, do you remember in the Gospel of John when Jesus saw Nathanael under a fig tree?"
"Yeah, but it always seemed weird," admits Chad. "What's up with that story?"
"Nathanael really encountered Jesus under the fig tree because he was meditating on Torah, or scripture, as we call it," Steve explains.
"Really?"
"Yes. You see, meditation on scripture IS a real encounter with God," replies Steve.
"Then, how do you do that?" Chad presses.
"Next time we take a walk out here, bring your Bible and I'll show you," promises Steve.
