Spiritual Formation - Meditation on Scripture

Sitting Under the Fig Tree

Meditation on Torah is an ancient Jewish tradition. King David writes about the value of meditation in the Psalms. Jews believed that meditation on scripture involved a direct encounter with God. Their way of meditating was to ponder the Torah one word at a time until they heard something of meaning directly from the Lord.

Rabbis at the time of Jesus often suggested that the shade of a fig tree was a good place to meditate on Torah. So think again about the Bible story where Jesus tells Nathanael that he saw him while he was still under the fig tree. What do you suppose Nathanael was doing under a tree? He was following the instruction of his rabbi!

Jesus was there with Nathanael in the midst of his meditations. He may not have seen Jesus, but he had an authentic encounter with the Living Word under that tree. And remember, Nathanael was a regular person just like you.

Meditation on scripture extends our understanding beyond Bible head knowledge into a human heart consciousness that beats with the divine rhythm of heavenly music. The Holy Spirit reveals the heart and mind of God to the human soul through our meditations. It is an authentic and direct encounter with the living God that will keep you coming back for more of him.

Why would you want to practice the spiritual discipline of meditation on scripture?
