QUIET LIPS - by Calvin Wulf

Spiritual Formation~

The spiritual discipline of silence mainly relies on quiet lips. I recently took a silent retreat at a place where the aim is for unbroken quietness. Quiet is even maintained in the dining hall at mealtimes.

My lips were sealed from Monday until Friday, except for daily communion, a brief daily meeting with my spiritual director and an hour of debrief every evening with my wife. That gave me abundant time to pray and discern.

The spiritual director suggested that I consider humility as outlined in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. That exercise offers a guide to imitate Jesus and to become more like him. Such prayers are simple, but the work is hard. It demands quiet lips, a quiet mind and a quiet place.

Ask Jesus for the grace needed to attain the greatest humility. That is, the humility of Christ. Ask the Father to send his Son as the guide. Then wait in silence until the Spirit gives discernment. Jesus loves a patient disciple.

I was a Muslim, but I have turned my back on the false prophesy's of Mohammad, he speaks lies and untruths, he perverts the young minds of Muslims all over the world. I have now found God through Christianity. I am glad to have found your site.

David, may the Lord bless you as you continue to pursue a new life in Him. Thank you for the reminder on silence. I currently run a few miles every evening and that is my silent time but taking a retreat to really dig in sounds both challenging and rewarding. May God bless you.
